It is with deep sorrow we announce the passing of Alson John Conkey on September 13th 2024, a beloved husband and father, and devoted friend. Alson was born on October 5th, 1938 in Erie, PA to Dolores & Alson Conkey. After Alson Sr’s passing, Dolores married Martin Wyant who also was Alson's father figure for over 25 years. Alson is survived by his wife Cheryl Conkey, his sister Donna Geiger, step-brother Marty Wyant, and his children, Christopher Conkey, Scott Conkey, his step-children, Kyler Fields, Heather Richardson, Teri Hoyt, Brad Young, and many grandchildren.
Alson attended Cathedral Preparatory School in Erie, PA and graduated from Gannon University with an Accounting degree. Alson served our country as a member of the U.S. Coast Guard, during which time he was selected to keep watch at John F. Kennedy’s inauguration, as a member of the USCG Honor Guard. After serving his Country, he began a successful career in retail management, eventually becoming a Vice President at Higby’s, a large department store in Ohio.
At the advice of his dear and trusted friend, Jerry Nanna, Alson moved to Houston, Texas in 1983 where he opened a Bridal Registry & Fine Giftware store, Conkey & Co., with two locations in Memorial & Rice Village – Houston, TX. During this time, Alson married Jayne Fields Conkey, and they enjoyed many happy years together, until she passed away from melanoma in 1992.
Alson later took joy in owning and operating a marine supply store, Bay Water Ships store, in Kemah, TX, and he moved to La Porte, TX, after the passing of Jayne. While in La Porte, Alson met and married Cheryl Conkey, with whom he shared his last 30 years of life, blessed with love and laughter, as they enjoyed retirement on the shores of Galveston Bay.
Alson was known by all who knew him for his unconditional love and kindness towards others, and his wonderful sense of humor.
An intimate graveside service will be held for Alson at La Porte Historical Cemetery, South 8th Street, La Porte, TX 77571 at 11:30am on Friday October 18th 2024.
