John Garland McCauley, 85, of Deer Park, Texas peacefully passed into the arms of our Lord on Saturday, February 10, 2024 at his daughter’s home in Friendswood, Texas after a recent illness.
John was born in Center, Texas on June 15, 1938 to Sanford Henry and Mary Pearl McCauley. John was one of the founding members of St. Hyacinth Catholic Church in Deer Park, Texas, where he was also a member of the Knights of Columbus. He participated in various groups and organizations, holding leadership positions in the Sunshiner’s Club, AARP, 50 + Club, Deer Park Chamber of Commerce, and Prime Timer’s Club. John was also a 32nd degree Mason and a lifetime member of Deer Park Masonic Lodge. He was a Shriner, served as a masonic instructor and was Worshipful Master of Sagemont Lodge.
John served in the Air Force Reserves from 1960 – 1966. He retired in 1995 after working 39 years for Houston Lighting and Power Company. He started as a crane operator at the age of 17 and retired as a maintenance supervisor. His strong work ethic and determination served as an example to many, especially his children.
John was preceded in death by his loving wife of 52 years, Amy, his parents, Sanford and Mary McCauley; brothers, Wayne and Bruce McCauley, and daughter Susan McCauley. John is survived by daughter, Dr. Lisa Duchamp and husband Robert of Friendswood; daughter, Laura Coombs of Beaumont, and son, Greg McCauley of Deer Park; grandchildren, Thad Duchamp and wife Brittney, Matthew Duchamp and wife Jewel, Lauren Duchamp, Travis Coombs and wife Heather, Susan Coombs, Katelyn Pilley and husband Travis, and Keeley Coombs; twelve great-grandchildren who brought him so much joy and happiness! He is also survived by other family members including Rhonda Dobbins, nieces, a beloved nephew, and his long-time companion Anita Brechtel who remained by his side throughout his illness. John was never more happy than when surrounded by his family.
The family would like to recognize Choice Hospice for their expert and compassionate care. They also want to sincerely express their gratitude for the AMAZING caregivers that made it possible to keep John at home during his illness: Emma Garza, Maria Hernandez, Gwen Putney, Lucy Timberlake and Marvina Wolf. “Each of you are truly Angels, sent by God, to care for our father during the end phase of his life here on earth. We were ALL truly blessed by your love and presence! “
Visitation will be on Friday, February 23, 2024 from 5 pm-8 pm with the Rosary Vigil from 6pm-7pm at Deer Park Funeral Home, 336 East San Augustine Street, Deer Park, TX 77536. Funeral Mass will be celebrated on Saturday, February 24, 2024 at 10:00 am at St. Hyacinth Catholic Church, 2921 Center Street, Deer Park, TX 77536. Interment at Grand View Memorial Park/Bethany Cemetery, following mass. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests donations to St. Hyacinth Catholic Church, Deer Park.
