An Angel was summoned to perform with God’s celestial choir this
October 30th, 2024. Marjorie Dell McKenzie Sefton’s voice will be
sorely missed on terra firma, yet she joins a divine chorus that includes
her beloved husband, Leon Sefton, her parents J.O. and Josie
McKenzie, her sisters Nadene Hoch and Marlene Delavan and
husband Macon.. The performance is conducted by her Savior Jesus
Christ and his joy of the music is indeed infinite. Here in this world,
she will be missed by her daughter Myra Farris and husband Dan; sons
Steven Sefton and wife Lori, David Sefton and wife Leann. “Granma”
will also be missed by nine Grandchildren, Kristina Dorismond, Daniel
Farris, Lauren Hettema, Devin Sefton, Austin Sefton, Tara Bacchus,
Amy McKinney, Melanie Beran, and Cara Burns, as well as their

Many nieces and nephews who considered “Aunt Marj”, at times, a
second mother.
“Granma” was born to J.O. McKenzie and Josie Bean McKenzie in
Hempstead Texas December 17th, 1934. Marjorie attended Grapeland
High School and then on to Texas State University formerly known as
Southwest Texas State Teachers College where she met her husband
of 62 years Leon Sefton, a four sport lettermen on the Bobcats. She
later completed her Master’s Degree at Sam Houston University in
Huntsville.
Marjorie, made an impact. It ripples across thousands of lives. She
pursued her passion and gave the greatest treasure – the gift of
reading. As a teacher specializing in helping the disadvantaged she
brought many students to literacy. She was both inspired and
inspiring. She gave the gift of education to her children and then her
grandkids: all received at least a bachelors, and most received their
post graduate education. Many in turn followed her example and
became teachers and college professors. In a time of intolerance her
strong Christian faith led her to see only people, not races. She was
very forward thinking and far ahead of the times. She saw all as equal
Children of God.
She was foremost a Christian, kind, loving and a beaming example
to all that knew her. “Grandad and Granma” were famous for their
semi-nomadic life, roaming the country on church trips and great road
trips in their beloved van enjoying amazing family camping vacations.
The family will remember her sheer joy of cooking wonderful feast for
Christmas and Thanksgiving. Her greatest joy was derived from her
children, grandchildren and great grandchildren; she always had a
ready story to recount and was endlessly amused by them. She loved
them all with the deepest heart.
Few people ever worked as hard to acquire her Master’s degree
driving to and from Sam Houston University several nights a week
while teaching during the day. It set an example of commitment to
education and an unrivalled work ethic. While most of her friends
dropped out, her tenacity was legendary, completing her graduate
degree like her parents before her. She loved the Houston Astros,
Native American Art, reading her Bible, and every aspect of her grand
and great-grand children. One can’t describe in words the way she
touched everyone’s lives. She was a rock of faith, when a problem
seemed too great to bear, prayer with Majorie always made it better.
God and Marjorie had a special relationship - she worshipped him all

the days of her life: He listened to her, honored her prayers, and
blessed her life. Parkinson’s was a hard blow to this family, first Leon
then Mother, she bore it with grace and never wavered in her faith.
Her daughter Myra was a blessing and her caretaker along with her
dear friend Latoya McCovey. She left this world peacefully, with her
family and friends near. She loved without reservation, and in turn
was beloved by all,
