Mary Anne Watts Baker Horton Obituary

Mary Anne Watts Baker Horton (Anne), daughter of the late Frank and Elizabeth (Betty) Watts, was born on June 30, 1931, in Ft. Worth, Texas and passed away in Houston on January 2, 2025.  She was 93 years old.

Anne spent her life in Houston, except for two years in her youth in Washington DC during WWII.  She graduated from River Oaks Elementary, Lanier Junior High and Lamar High School. She attended Randolph-Macon Woman’s College before returning to Houston to marry Walter Browne Baker, Jr.  Anne and Brownie were married 43 years until his death in 1994. These years were busy, raising three boys and being involved in school, church and community activities.  She enjoyed many memorable family car trips across North America, including the legendary family drive to Acapulco. In later years, she and Brownie traveled extensively on business trips and vacation adventures in retirement.

In 1996, Anne married Edward Everett Horton, III of Los Angeles, California. They enjoyed 19 years together until his death in 2015. They traveled globally for business and pleasure, including dancing in costume at Carnival in Brazil, and entertained in their homes in Houston and Los Angeles.

Anne was a past President of The Garden Club of Houston, past member of the Board of Trustees of Texas Children’s Hospital, a member of The Junior League of Houston, River Oaks Country Club, The Dancers and The Paul Jones.  She was a member of St. Martin’s Episcopal Church for 60 years, where she was active in women’s outreach programs and the Saintly Stitchers.

Anne was a gracious hostess and enjoyed creating many social gatherings of friends and family that were always joyous occasions. Holidays with family were especially fun and will be missed by her children, grandchildren and extended family.

Anne is survived by her three sons, Walter Browne Baker, III (Robin), Jeffrey Watts Baker (Pam), and Mark Alden Baker (Bet). She leaves her four granddaughters, Katy Baker, Elizabeth Baker, Emily Baker Heard (Ryan), and Julie Baker (fiancé, Robert Kempner).   In addition, she leaves her three stepdaughters, Winter Hoffman (Fred), June Van Nort and Janet Horton, as well as nieces, nephews and goddaughters.

The family wishes to thank Elizabeth, Grady, Lisa, Mary and Samantha for their years of service and devotion to Anne along with At Your Side Home Care.

A visitation to share memories of Anne with her family and friends is scheduled for Friday, February 21, 2025 at The Junior League of Houston from 3-5pm. A private graveside service is scheduled at a later date.

Donations in memory of Anne can be made to Texas Children’s Hospital (texaschildrens.org) or a charity of your choice.
