Nicky Nelson Wakefield Carraway Obituary

Nicky Nelson Wakefield Carraway, slipped into the arms of our Lord and Savior and all that Heaven has to offer on February 17, 2025.

Nick was born on December 15, 1951, to Eileen Josephine Statts and Nelson Carraway. He is predeceased in death by his parents, his brother Michael Charles Carraway, sister Catherine Josephine Johnson, and his son Charles Justin Carraway.

He is survived by wife Elizabeth Atkinson Carraway, daughter in love Hillery Carraway and Grandson Wyatt Charles Carraway. Son and family, John Michael, Liz and Jake Borras. Granddaughter Vanessa and Axle Gomez. Stepson Bryan Hill and Granddaughter Ashley Hill.

It would also be important to Nick that we acknowledge friends Lonnie and Debbie Redd, Kenny and Caroline James, Bill and Debbie Lowe, Dave and Danna Curlee, Robert and Debra Wesley, David Powell, Steve Davison, Brenda Fenn Sanzone, Debbie Meadows and Linda Cummins. He loved them so.

Nick became a Civil War Buff at the knee of his Grandfather Jesse Carraway and a card shark at the elbow of his Grandmother Lillian Carraway. As an adult he loved to play online Poker, Spades, Hearts, Gin Rummy and Solitaire.

Nick participated in a competitive gun club at Shell along with his dad and brother and was a licensed scuba diver and a licensed pilot. Nick was also a history buff.

Nick served in the US Army from April 5, 1971, through April 6, 1973, and was a Long-Range Reconnaissance Patrol in Vietnam.  Nick was exposed to Agent Orange and suffered from his 20's until his death with Bullous Emphysema.

During his life he worked in plants in the Deer Park Pasadena area and then moved to Florida where he raised his family. Nick owned a tire company, then a Durable Medical Equipment company serving a multiple state client base while in Florida. Nick returned to Texas in approximately 2003 and cared for his mother until her death in 2005.

In May 2005 Nick had a lifesaving lung volume reduction that increased his life by several years.  He was able to enjoy life and experience many years of health with Liz and his friends.

Highlights of his life with Liz include motorcycle trips to West Texas Big Bend, Miami Fl, Rochester NY, Wellsboro PA and Run for The Wall and Rolling Thunder from Texas to Washington DC visiting the Vietnam Memorial Wall and honoring his Vietnam brothers who didn't come home.

His 1966 Dodge Charger became his obsession in 2017 and many hours were spent detailing, polishing and lovingly stroking its lines. He enjoyed membership and weekly meetings with his auto club Rodtiques of Houston.

Nick's stories, his exclamations of "You can't fix stupid" and "I know that", his humor and intelligence will be genuinely missed.

Military Honors will be held 11:25 AM Friday March 21, 2025 at Houston National Cemetery, 10410 Veterans Memorial Dr, Houston, Texas 77038.
