Valaree Alsup Petterson Lewis, was born on January 29, 1924 in Ft. Worth, TX to Albert & Alma Alsup. She went to her Heavenly home on April 28, 2024.
Valaree would spend her childhood in Ft. Worth during the great depression. It was where, when in her teens, she would meet the man who would become her husband, Owen Douglas Petterson. With the United States entering World War II, their plans would be altered slightly, as Owen enlisted in the Army Air Corp as a pilot and was stationed in Dothan, Alabama. Distance did not deter her, Valaree (Val) boarded a train and met Owen there, where they were married in 1943. They would welcome their only child, daughter Nancy Ann in August of 1944. When the war ended they returned to Texas. They moved around in the following years as they raised Nancy, ultimately ending up in the Houston area. Nancy would give them their 2 granddaughters, Debi Margison and Deanna Howell, so she then became Mammaw.
In 1970, Val & Owen build a home in Deer Park, TX, on Meadowlark. They started attending First Baptist Church Deer Park, where Val is still a member. They were very involved in Church activities. They would move several times, but were always in the Deer Park area. They were able to travel in the US and abroad on many great adventures. They loved Colorado and New Mexico. They would often take off on a road trip and not tell anyone until they were well on their way.
Sadly, Val lost her daughter Nancy very unexpectedly in 1982. Val and Owen stayed in Deer Park. They spent lots of time going back and forth to their farm in Lexington, TX. They loved spending time with their family. After over 50 years of marriage, Owen went home to be with the Lord.
God did not leave her in her mourning alone. He connected her with a friend from church who was also recently widowed, Lamar Lewis. Lamar was truly sent by God. They wed and would have 19 years of marriage before Lamar’s passing. Val loved his big family. Her “Bonus Family.”
Mammaw loved to tell stories of her past and after 100.25 years of life, there were a whole lot of them. She was a blessing to so many people. Full of life, very quick witted and you never knew what she was going to say next. Whether she was Val, Soupy or Mammaw, she taught us so many life lessons; to put your trust in God first, to love people right where they are, to pray and then pray some more. Her faith in Jesus was strong and did not waver. She has left a legacy that spans 4 generations. What a glorious life!
Valaree (Mammaw) was preceded in death by her first husband Owen, her second husband Lamar, her daughter Nancy, her parents, and many other beloved family members.

For years Mammaw was looking forward to her Heavenly reunion. She would tell everyone she met, she was blessed with 2 wonderful husbands, a beautiful daughter and a family she loved more than anything, but she was ready to go home. Her prayer was finally answered.
